What is Pride Month?
Pride Month, celebrated every June, is a time dedicated to uplifting and celebrating the lives, voices, and rights of LGBTQ+ people that’s individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and others.
It marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots of 1969, which were a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. Pride began as a protest and continues as both a celebration of identity and a reminder of ongoing struggles for acceptance, safety, and equity.
Pride and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)
Celebrating Pride Month in schools reinforces key DEI principles:
Diversity: Recognising and valuing different sexual orientations and gender identities as part of the rich variety of human experience.
Equity: Understanding that some students and families face barriers based on who they are and actively working to remove those barriers.
Inclusion: Creating safe, respectful environments where everyone can be themselves without fear of bullying, isolation, or discrimination.
